These bright green lagoons on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula are part of the Sian Ka’an, a biosphere reserve in the municipality of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Part of the 5,280 km² reserve is on land and part is in the Caribbean Sea, including a section of coral reef. Over 200 conservation projects have been successfully carried out in order to protect areas of high biodiversity value, such as the coral reefs, and archaeological sites of the Maya civilization.
