Mountains in Coastal and Central Libya

25.0N 19.8E

December 18th, 2010 Category: Deserts, Mountains, Volcanoes

Libya - December 10th, 2010

Areas of mountains in Libya appear dark brown, in contrast with the pale yellow and tan Sahara Desert sands. The range near the coast at the top of the image is the Al Jabel Al Akhdar, meaning the Green Mountain. It is heavily forested, a rare occurrence in Libya, one of the least forested countries on the planet.

Instead of forest, the prominent features of the other two dark brown areas visible further inland are volcanic in nature. The Haruj Volcanic field is visible as a rounded area, while the Tibesti Mountains can be seen further south in the full image. They have a more triangular shape and are located innorthern Chad and part of southern Libya.
