This extensive brown area amidst yellow desert sands in Libya isĀ  Pliocene-to-Holocene Haruj volcanic field.

It covers a broad 45,000 sq km area in central Libya and contains very well-preserved basaltic scoria cones, lava flows, and explosion craters.

The Haruj field contains about 150 volcanoes, 30 of which are small shield volcanoes with heights of between 100 and 400 m. The youngest lava flows of the Haruj field are located at its northern side.
