Libya - December 29th, 2011

Haruj is a large volcanic field spread across 45,000 km2 (17,000 sq mi) in central Libya. It contains about 150 volcanoes, including numerous basaltic scoria cones and about 30 small shield volcanoes, along with craters and lava flows.

One particularly large lava flow can be observed along the western flanks of the field, appearing as a dark brown, slightly smoother area. Surrounding the field are the yellow sands of the Libyan Desert. In the full image, rows of sand dunes can be observed.
