December 10th, 2010 Category: Volcanoes

Japan - December 6th, 2010

Most of the populated areas on Japan’s main island of Honshu lie along its coasts and creep upwards towards the mountains running down the center of the island, as one can observe here by the greyish tan urban areas by the sea in contrast with the dark green and brown peaks further inland.

The most prominent cities lie along the southeastern coast, including (from right to left) Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. Tokyo is located by Tokyo Bay, Nagoya is situated along the shores of Ise Bay, and Osaka is situated on Osaka Bay. Also of note, between Tokyo and Nagoya, is Mount Fuji, whose snow-capped volcanic summit can be observed not far from the shores.
