Mexico - April 6th, 2010

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and part of the Yucatán Peninsula, in southeastern Mexico. The northern side of the isthmus is swampy and densely covered with jungle, a fact which is reflected by the dark green and red color here, indicating good to high photosynthetic activity.

On the Yucatán Peninsula, to the east, short and tall tropical jungles are the predominant natural vegetation types, although deforestation is a problem in the area. The visible areas of the peninsula show low to good photosynthetic activity, as they are yellow to green in color.
