Vegetation Index Along Western Mediterranean Coast40.1N 4.9E
This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of the coastal areas of several countries in the western Mediterranean Sea (clockwise from upper right in full image): Italy, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain and France.
Several islands can also be observed: the Balnearic Islands of Spain (near center), Sardinia (belonging to Italy, right) and Corsica (belonging to France, above former).
The vegetation index is highest on the islands, the coast of Algeria, and the northern flanks of the Pyrenees, indicated by the dark green color with some rusty red patches. The index is lowest (yellow to white and bright red) in the lower part of the image, where the fertile coastal plains give way to the Sahara Desert.
