Track of TS 12W

Early on August 3, the JMA upgraded an area of low pressure near Wake Island to a tropical depression. The system intensified rapidly and just 6 hours later, the JMA upgraded the system to a tropical storm, naming it Merbok. Soon, the JTWC started monitoring the system as a tropical depression, and upgraded it to a tropical storm later.

Tropical Storm Merbok (12W), located approximately 475 nm west-northwest of Wake Island, has tracked westward at 11 knots over the past six hours. Maximum significant wave height is 16 feet.
