Tropical Storm Maria (14L) Intensifies Over Atlantic Ocean17.3N 47.5W
The tropical depression in the Atlantic has intensified and is now Tropical Storm Maria (14L), the 13th named storm of the 2011 hurricane season.
At 11:00am AST (1500 UTC) the center of Tropical Storm Maria was located near latitude 13.0 north, longitude 42.0 west. Maria is moving toward the west near 23 mph (37 km/h) and this general motion is expected to continue during the next two days.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Some slight strengthening is possible during the next 48 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) mainly to the north of the center. Estimated minimum central pressure is 1003 mb (29.62 inches).
