Tropical Depression Nine-E formed at 2 pm PDT (2100 UTC) on August 27 and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Ileana later that evening.

As of 8 p.m. PDT (0100 UTC) August 29, Tropical Storm Ileana is located within 20 nautical miles of 19.1°N 113.1°W, about 335 mi (535 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Maximum sustained winds are 85 knots (75 mph, 120 km/h), with stronger gusts. Minimum central pressure is 987 mbar (hPa; 29.15 InHg), and the system is moving northwest at 8 kt (9 mph, 15 km/h). Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center of Ileana.
