Tropical Storm Rumbia (06W) formed over the Philippines late Friday and could begin affecting Taiwan (upper left) on Sunday, bringing showers to the eastern and southern parts of the country.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, Tropical Storm Rumbia was centered 1,240 kilometers south-southeast of Taiwan’s southernmost tip of Eluanbi, moving in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 26 km per hour. Rumbia is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts reaching 90 kph, the bureau said Saturday morning.

There is little chance the storm will directly hit Taiwan, forecasters said, but they warned that the unstable weather it causes could last until July 2 islandwide. The sixth tropical storm to be formed in the 2013 Pacific typhoon season, Rumbia means palm tree in Malaysian.

In late-June, an area of disturbed weather persisted to the east of the Philippines, accompanied by a low-pressure area. At 1200 UTC on June 26, the system was designed as Invest 99W by the JTWC. Initially tracking southward, the invest-disturbance moved east and then recurved to the west, steadily gaining in organization and intensity.

At 0300 UTC on June 27, the disturbance, situated 520 km (325 mi) east of Surigao, Philippines, became sufficiently organized to be classified as a tropical depression by the PAGASA, and as such the system was given the name Gorio by the same agency. The same day, the system was also classified as a tropical depression by the JMA. Tracking to the northwest under the influence of a subtropical ridge to the northeast, the depression gradually organized, despite being situated in an area of low to moderate wind shear.

At 1200 UTC the following day, the JMA upgraded the depression to tropical storm intensity, naming it Rumbia (06w); the PAGASA upgraded the system three hours later. In Butuan, Philippines, heavy rainfall generated from the nearby storm caused the suspension of elementary and high schools; the floods also submerged rice fields in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte.
