As of 11 p.m. AST September 16 (0300 UTC September 17), Hurricane Julia (12L) is located within 30 nautical miles of 23.5°N 42.9°W, about 1375 mi (2210 km) southwest of the Azores.

Maximum sustained winds are 70 knots (80 mph, 130 km/h), with stronger gusts. Minimum central pressure is 983 mbar (hPa; 29.03 InHg), and the system is moving west-northwest at 21 kt (24 mph, 39 km/h).

Hurricane force winds extend up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center of Julia, and tropical storm force winds up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center.
