Bolaven (16W) Upgraded to Category 1 Typhoon – August 22nd, 201238.0N 149.2E
Typhoon Bolaven (16W) is currently churning in the Pacific Ocean.
On August 18, the JTWC started to monitor a tropical disturbance that had developed within a trough of low pressure, about 530 km (330 mi) to the southwest of Hagatna in Guam.
During that day the disturbance gradually developed further, before during the next day the JMA started to monitor the system as a tropical depression, while the JTWC issued a tropical cyclone formation alert.
On August 20, both the JMA and the JTWC upgraded the system to a tropical storm and named it Bolaven. Early on August 21, the JMA upgraded Bolaven to a severe tropical storm. Later, the JMA upgraded Bolaven to a typhoon, while the JTWC reported that Bolaven had become equivalent to a category 1 typhoon.
