Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia – April 27th, 2013

Multiple lakes and wetland areas can be observed in this image that focuses on Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia (counter-clockwise from lower left quadrant). Visible near the center left is the Okavango Delta, an inland delta in Botswana, with the salt flats of the Makgadikgadi Pan to the southeast. In the upper left quadrant is the Barotse Floodplain, in Zambia, while in the upper right quadrant is Lake Kariba, on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border.

The area in the center of the image is the Caprivi Strip, a narrow protrusion of Namibia eastwards from the Okavango Region about 450 km (280 mi), between Botswana to the south, and Angola and Zambia to the north. Caprivi is bordered by the Okavango, Kwando, Chobe and Zambezi rivers. 

Climate Change’s Affects on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe

Rainfall around Lake Kariba (lower left quadrant), in Zimbabwe, is decreasing at a rate of 0.63 mm per year, while evaporation rates have increased by 31% at an average rate of 2.77 mm per year since 1963. Also, the temperatures around the Kariba area have been rising since 1964. All these climatic factors have led to decreasingly water levels and nutrients, and consequently to a decrease in the lake’s fish population (click here for more information).

Dozens of fires burning in southern Africa contribute to a haze hanging over the region. Here, fires can be seen in Mozambique (above) and Zimbabwe (below), east and south of Lake Malawi. Popcorn clouds also dot the skies near the lake and the Mozambican coast.

A cloud of smoke caused by fires across Angola hangs over the upper part of this image of Africa. Visible in the full image are dozens of individual blazes and plumes of smoke. Visible in the lower part of the image are bodies of water such as the broom-shaped Okavango Delta (center of bottom edge) and Lake Kariba (lower right edge), on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, as well as the white salt flats of the Etosha Pan (lower left edge), in northern Namibia.
