United Arab Emirates - January 19th, 2012

An artificial island or man-made island is an island or archipelago that has been constructed by people rather than formed by natural means. They are created by expanding existing islets, construction on existing reefs, or amalgamating several natural islets into a bigger island.

In modern times artificial islands are usually formed by land reclamation. Dubai is home to several artificial islands projects, including the three Palm Islands projects, The World and the Dubai Waterfront. Only the Palm Jumeirah is inhabited so far. Visible here along the coast, from southwest to northeast, are the artificial islands of the Palm Jebel Ali, Palm Jumeirah and World Archipelagos.

Saudi Arabia - November 22nd, 2011

A teal green phytoplankton bloom colors the waters of the Persian Gulf, just offshore of Qatar (to the west), Saudi Arabia (to the south) and the United Arab Emirates (to the southeast). Many islands can be seen off the coast of the Emirates on the right side of the image.

Of particular note are the artificial Palm Islands and World Archipelago, visible at the far right in the full image. The Palm Islands are an artificial archipelago in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on which major commercial and residential infrastructures will be constructed. Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent, and will have a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centers.

The World or World Islands is an artificial archipelago of various small islands constructed in the rough shape of a world map, located 4.0 kilometres (2.5 mi) off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The World islands are composed mainly of sand dredged from Dubai’s shallow coastal waters, and are one of several artificial island developments in Dubai.
