Track of TS 23W

Tropical Storm Maria (23W), located approximately 820 nm north-northwest of Wake Island, has tracked eastward at 10 knots over the past six hours.

Animated infrared satellite imagery depicts an elongated, defined low-level circulation center (LLCC) with no associated deep convection. Recent visible imagery showed that the LLCC was predominantly characterized by stratocumulus. Recent microwave imagery indicated dry air enveloping the entire system as well poorly-defined low-level banding.

The initial intensity is based on objective intensity estimates of 26 knots and recent SSMIS wind estimates of 20 to 25 knots. Based on the slowly weakening LLCC and marginal upper-level environment as well as cool sst (24-25c), td 23w is forecast to dissipate within the next 12 hours while tracking eastward. Maximum significant wave height is 12 feet.

Early on August 3, the JMA upgraded an area of low pressure near Wake Island to a tropical depression. The system intensified rapidly and just 6 hours later, the JMA upgraded the system to a tropical storm, naming it Merbok. Soon, the JTWC started monitoring the system as a tropical depression, and upgraded it to a tropical storm later.

Tropical Storm Merbok (12W), located approximately 475 nm west-northwest of Wake Island, has tracked westward at 11 knots over the past six hours. Maximum significant wave height is 16 feet.

Maximum sustained winds are at 45 knots, with higher gusts of up to 55 knots. The radius of 34 knot winds extending outward from the eye of the storm is 30 nautical miles in the southwest and northwest quadrants, 35 nautical miles in the southeast quadrant, and 40 nautical miles in the northeast quadrant.
