USA – October 22nd, 2012

Several important cities and state capitals can be seen as grey areas along the east coast of the United States of America. From upper right to lower left we can observe New York City, Newark, Trenton, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Sediments can be observed in Delaware Bay (between southern New Jersey and Delaware, near the image center), though fewer are visible in Chesapeake Bay (southwest of the former).

USA - April 6th, 2012

A plume of smoke from forest fires in the southern New Jersey Pinelands can be observed just right of the center of this image of the USA’s eastern seaboard. Two blazes in the area were expected to blacken 400 acres Friday before being contained, the state Forest Fire Service said.

The fires, burning either in or near the Winslow Wildlife Management Area in Camden County, were not threatening any homes or property. There was no immediate word on what caused them. The bigger of the two fires was burning alongside the Atlantic City Expressway, but a strong wind was blowing smoke away from the roadway, which remained open.

The main fire was expected to burn 375 acres before it reaches the edge of containment areas set up on all four sides of it, he said. The smaller one had burned about 25 acres and was 100 percent contained by mid-afternoon. Barring any drastic wind shifts, the larger fire was expected to remain within the containment lines.

Smoke was visible as far away as Atlantic City, 30 miles to the east, and Trenton, 34 miles to the north. The fire service said conditions were perfect across the state for wildfires, with little rain in recent weeks, and strong winds fanning flames. The blazes came just days after the state issued forest fire danger alerts and restricted campfires in many places.

USA - March 11th, 2012

Multiple cities can be observed along the eastern coast of the United States of American in this image, appearing as grey areas (best observed upon opening the full image). From the upper right, moving southwestward near the shoreline, one can see Boston, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; New York City, New York; Trenton, New Jersey; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, D.C.

Visible further east are the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachian chain is a barrier to east-west travel as it forms a series of alternating ridgelines and valleys oriented in opposition to any road running east-west. These alternating ridgelines and valley appear as alternating lines of brown and green, respectively.
