Algeria - May 23rd, 2011

Green, fertile coastal Algeria gives way to arid terrain as one moves to the lower half of this image. The large, brown area that stands out against the light orange-tan in this part of the image is the Great Sebkha, also known as the Sebkha of Oran.

It is a salt lake in a depression in Algeria distant 12 km from the Mediterranean Sea and 15 km from the city of Oran, with a size of approximately 44km by 12km (52800 Ha).

The depression starts at 110 meters altitude and finishes at -80 meters below sea level. It is closed and restricted to the north by the massif of Murdjadjo, whose maximum altitude is 589 meters, and to the south by the massif of Tessala, whose maximum altitude is 1061 meters.
