Somalia - December 27th, 2010

The Surud Mountain Range appears as a green line parallel to the northern coast of Somalia on the “Horn of Africa”. The horn is a peninsula in East Africa that juts hundreds of kilometers into the Arabian Sea and lies along the southern side of the Gulf of Aden.

With the exception of the green mountains, much of the rest of the peninsula appears covered by tan and red terrain. The red land belongs mostly to Ethiopia’s Somali Region, while the tan terrain is part of Somalia.

Somalia- November 28th, 2010

This image focuses on Somalia, the easternmost country on the African continent. The terrain appears mostly dry, although a fertile green area can be observed along the northern coast by the Surud Mountain Range.

Upon opening the full image, the four islands of the Socotra archipelago can be observed off the coast of the Horn of Africa, in the Indian Ocean. The largest island, also called Socotra, is about 95% of the landmass of the archipelago. Despite its close proximity to Somalia, Socotra is part of the Republic of Yemen.
