Red Sea – September 1st, 2012

Dust blows off the coast of Sudan (upper left) and Eritrea (lower left) and over the Red Sea. Visible through the dust is the Dahlak Archipelago, just off the coast of Eritrea. The parallel, streaked patterns in the dust are due to cross-currents of air.

Red Sea – August 27th, 2012

Several plumes of dust can be seen blowing off the coast of the African continent, over bodies of water, towards the Arabian Peninsula. The largest dust plume can be observed in the upper left quadrant, blowing northeastward over the Red Sea, off the coast of Sudan, near the border with Eritrea. In the lower right quadrant, dust blows off the coast of Somalia and over the Gulf of Aden.

Red Sea – August 18th, 2012

Dust blows off the coasts of Sudan (north) and Eritrea (south), over the Red Sea. Upon opening the full image, parallel rows of dust in rippled patterns can be seen blowing off the coast of Sudan, east of the Tokar Game Reserve. These wavelike patterns are caused by rising and falling air currents.

Sudan – July 25th, 2012

A plume of dust archs off the coast of Sudan, south of Port Sudan. The dust is thickest towards the middle, but also fans out, becoming more transparent away from the center. A veil of dust also hangs over the Red Sea area in general, particularly on the Saudi Arabian side.

Red Sea – July 19th, 2012

Fierce winds kick up dust and blow it about, over Sudan, Eritrea, the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia. A thick plume can be seen blowing northeastward off the Sudanse coast, near the border with Egypt, at the upper left. In the lower part of the image, however, the wind direction appears to be blowing the dust northwest, back towards the coasts of Eritrea and Sudan (best observed in full image).
