New Zealand is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean with an area of 104,515 sq mi (270,692 sq km) and a population (2009 est.) of around 4,317,000. The capital is Wellington.

New Zealand consists of the North Island and the South Island (visible here), which are separated by Cook Strait, and several smaller islands. Both main islands are bisected by mountain ranges.

Here one can see the snow-capped Southern Alps, a 650-kilometre long range that rises abruptly along the west coast of the South Island and only reaches the east coast at Kaikoura. The highest peak in this chain is Mt Cook, which measures 3,684 meters (12,283 feet).
