Edinburgh by Firth of Forth, Scotland – November 21st, 2011

November 21st, 2011 Category: Image of the day, Rivers

United Kingdom - November 8th, 2011

This orthorectified image shows the Firth of Forth (lower half of image), the estuary or firth of Scotland’s River Forth, where it flows into the North Sea. It is located between Fife to the north, and West Lothian, the City of Edinburgh and East Lothian to the south. Populated areas appear white in this image.

Geologically, the Firth of Forth is a fjord, formed by the Forth Glacier in the last glacial period. The river is tidal as far inland as Stirling, but generally it is considered that the inland extent of the firth ends at the Kincardine Bridge. The inner Firth, i.e. between the Kincardine and Forth bridges, has lost about half of its former intertidal area as a result of land being reclaimed, partly for agriculture, but mainly for industry and the large ash lagoons built to deposit the spoil from the coal fired Longannet Power Station near Kincardine.

UK and Ireland - November 12th, 2011

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of the United Kingdom and Ireland, in northern Europe. England, Scotland and Wales are separated from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland by the Irish Sea.

The index is generally good (green) throughout, although some areas of low activity (yellow) can be seen in southern Ireland and in Scotland (upon opening the full image). Patches of high activity (rusty red) are sparse.

UK and Ireland - April 27th, 2011

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of the United Kingdom and parts of the Republic of Ireland.

The Scottish Highlands show the lowest levels of photosynthetic activity (yellow), while the rest of the land visible shows a mostly good (green) to high (rusty red) index.

Fires in Scotland and Ireland, Phytoplankton in the Atlantic – May 6th, 2011

May 6th, 2011 Category: Fires, Image of the day, Phytoplankton

United Kingdom and Ireland - May 3rd, 2011

Fires in Scotland and Northern Ireland continued to burn in this image taken one day after EOSnap first observed the blazes (click here for previous article).

The main fire in the Scottish Highlands continued to blow smoke across the Minch towards the Isle of Lewis, although here the smoke is blowing west-southwest.

Other fires may have still been burning in Northern Ireland (UK) and the northwestern parts of the Republic of Ireland, although the popcorn clouds above the region make it difficult to pinpoint the individual blazes.

Finally, in the full image, the bright green and turquoise phytoplankton bloom observed previously can still be seen flourishing in the Atlantic Ocean, southwest of the UK. There is also some evidence of a fainter bloom in the North Sea, to the northeast.

Several interesting phenomena can be observed in and near the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

First, multiple fires can be seen releasing smoke towards the northwest in the upper part of the full image.

The first close-up shows fires in Northern Ireland (UK) and the northwestern parts of the Republic of Ireland.

The second close-up shows fires in the Scottish Highlands, with smoke blowing across the Minch towards the Isle of Lewis.

Finally, a bright green and turquoise phytoplankton bloom can be observed in the lower left quadrant of the main image (also visible in greater detail in the third close-up).
