Dust Storm over Syria - Detail

An intense dust storm is spreading sands from Syria to the Iraq.

The dust is blowing north out of the Syrian Desert in Iraq, Syria and Kuwait.

Though the color matches the ground, the airborne dust is brighter and smoother in texture, which makes it stand out in the image. The dust blankets the land between the Euphrates River in the east and the Tigris River in the west – the region that nurtured some of the earliest human civilizations.

The two close-ups give a detailed look at the sands blowing across the desert.

Dust storm over Middle East - February 16th, 2009

The dust storm that has been affecting the Arabian Peninsula over the last week appears to be waning.

Sands are still visible blowing from Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, over the Gulf of Oman (right) and the Persian Gulf (left), towards Iran (above).

However, the dust cloud appears less dense than several days ago (see here).

By opening the full image, it is possible to see the entire coastlines of Oman, Yemen and Somalia.

The southeastern shoreline of Oman is now very clear, whereas a couple of days earlier it was veiled by dense swirls of sand (see here).

There is still some dust over the Gulf of Aden, between Somalia and Yemen.

The dust storm that has been brewing over the Arabian Peninsula for the last few days is still veiling the skies above the area. The storm spread to the Middle East from Africa.

The first close-up show streaks in the sand blowing off the coast of Oman, into the Gulf of Oman.

The second focuses on the sand clouding the view of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates as dust particles are carried over the Persian Gulf.

The final close-up depicts the swirled patterns winds are causing in the sand blowing off the southern coast of Oman.

The first close-up gives a detailed look at the sands blowing across the shoreline. The ridged pattern, visible both over land and above the sea, is caused by the granules in the wind.

The second close-up focuses on the strong wind blowing the sand over Syria.

A massive dust storm is covering the entire Arabian Peninsula.

The full image (open by clicking on thumbnail to the right) shows parts of  Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Kuwait, all of which are veiled by sand.

Sands are blowing across the Persian Gulf and beginning to reach southern Iran, as exemplified in the first close-up.

The second close-up focuses on southern Saudia Arabia, Yemen, and their nearby African neighbors: Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia.

Current wind direction is keeping the  Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and those nearby African coastal countries free of sand for the time being.
