Namibia - May 23rd, 2011

Visible near the top edge of the left side of this image of Namibia is the Brandberg Mountain, the country’s highest peak.

It is located in Damaraland, in the northwestern Namib Desert, near the coast, and covers an area of approximately 650 km². Its highest point stands at 2573m above sea level and is located on the flat Namib gravel plains.

These gravel plans appear tan in color and extend southward to the middle of the image, where the sandy portion of the Namib Desert beings. Rippling rows of orange sand dunes can be observed in the full image.

The Tassili n’Ajjer, a mountain range in the Sahara desert, is visible as a vast, dark brown plateau in the lower part of this image. It is located in south-east Algeria at the borders of Libya, Niger and Mali, covering an area of 72,000 sq. km.

Some large areas of orange sand dunes can be seen to the north; individual rows of dunes can be discerned in the full image.

Located within the light tan area situated between the plateau and the dune sea is the Tassili in Bider, an impact crater that sits in dry, rugged terrain in Algeria. Spanning 6 kilometres, the crater sits at the southern end of a range of hills. It has an elevated position and concentric rings.

Kuiseb River Separating Sandy Southern Namib from Rocky Northern Namib Desert – February 26th, 2011

Namibia - February 12th, 2011

The Namib Desert occupies an area of around 80,900 km² (31,200 square miles), stretching from the Usiab River (north) to the town of Lüderitz (south) and from the Atlantic Ocean (west) to the Namib Escarpment (east).

Southern Namib (between Lüderitz and the Kuiseb River) comprises a vast dune sea with some of the tallest and most spectactular dunes of the world, ranging in color from pink to vivid orange.

Moving north from Sossusvlei, the sand gradually gives way to a rocky desert that extends all the way from Sossusvlei to the Swakop River.

The dividing line between the southern and northern parts of the desert is clearly visible near the top of this image. There, the Kuiseb River appears as a green line separating the ridges of the orange sand dunes to the south (observable in great detail in the full image) from the flatter, rocky desert to the north.

Snow on the Dunes of the Taklamakan Desert, China

Snow and Dunes

These images show snow on and edges of the Taklamakan desert  (full image) and some of its dunes,(close-up), in China.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, given our idea of deserts as hot, sun-battered places, they can be very cold places where snow sometimes does fall. The definition of a desert is how little precipitation the area gets. It has no bearing on how hot or cold it is.

Deserts are typically defined as areas that receive an average annual precipitation of less than 250 mm (10 in), or as areas in which more water is lost due to evaporation than falls as precipitation.
