Multiple cities can be observed along the eastern coast of the United States of American in this image, appearing as grey areas (best observed upon opening the full image). From the upper right, moving southwestward near the shoreline, one can see Boston, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; New York City, New York; Trenton, New Jersey; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, D.C.

Visible further east are the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachian chain is a barrier to east-west travel as it forms a series of alternating ridgelines and valleys oriented in opposition to any road running east-west. These alternating ridgelines and valley appear as alternating lines of brown and green, respectively.

The cities of Boston (northwest of the Cape Cod Peninsula at the right), Providence (west of the peninsula), and New York (on Long Island, in the bottom left corner) can all be viewed in this image of northeastern USA.

Long Island is both the longest and the largest island in the contiguous United States, extending extends 118 miles (190 km) eastward from New York Harbor to Montauk Point. It has a maximum north-to-south expanse of 23 miles (37 km) between the northern Long Island Sound coast and the southern Atlantic coast.

The cities of Boston, Massachusetts and Province, Rhode Island can be viewed northwest and west, respectively, of the Cape Cod Peninsula.

Boston occupies the shores of Boston Harbor, by Massachusetts Bay, while Providence is located along Narragansett Bay.

Visible to the south of the Cape Cod Peninsula are two islands: Martha’s Vineyard (left) and Nantucket (right).

USA and Canada - October 13th, 2010

This image shows portions of eastern Canada and the northeastern USA. The dark blue body of water by the left edge is part of Lake Ontario, on the border between the two countries. The series of long, thin, parallel lakes to the south of Lake Ontario are the Finger Lakes of New York State, USA.

Extending diagonally to the northeast from Lake Ontario is the Saint Lawrence River. It passes the cities of Montreal and Quebec City on its way to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (not visible here). Another city, Ottawa can also be observed west of Montreal, on the Ottawa River, one of the Saint Lawrence’s tributaries.

Moving southeast to the coast of the USA, the cities of Boston, Providence and New York can be seen as well. Boston is situated on the coast above the hooked peninsula of Cape Cod; Providence is south of Boston by the shores of a series of bays, and part of New York city can be observed by Long Island at the center of the bottom edge.

The cities of Boston, Massachusetts (above) and Providence, Rhode Island (below) appear as grey areas amidst the generally green terrain of this part of the northeastern United States of America.

Protruding out into the Atlantic Ocean is the Cape Cod peninsula, part of Massachusetts. Below it are the islands of Martha’s Vineyard (left) and Nantucket (right), also belonging to that state.

Some phytoplankton can be seen in Nantucket Sound, between the peninsula and the islands. Upon opening the full image, the green phytoplankton can be seen reaching much farther out to the east, into the Atlantic.
