Brazil’s two largest cities, São Paolo and Rio de Janeiro, can be observed near the coast in this image of the southeastern part of the country. Rio de Janeiro is located across from the city of Niterói, both on the shores of Guanabara Bay.

São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, the largest city in the southern hemisphere and America, and the world’s sixth largest city by population, as one might suppose from the expansive area it covers here, grey in contrast to the surrounding green landscape.

This orthorectified wide-swath ASAR image shows the cities of Rio de Janeiro (left) and Niteroi (right) on the shores of Guanabara Bay. The large island in the upper part of the bay is Ilha do Governador.

Multiple ships and oil platforms can be seen in the bay and in the Atlantic Ocean near the bay’s entrance. Visible along the Atlantic shoreline southwest of the bay are famous beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema.

Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the second largest city of Brazil, and the third largest metropolitan area and agglomeration in South America, boasting approximately 6.3 million people within the city proper, making it the 6th largest in the Americas, and 26th in the world.

Visible in the lower left corner is the city of Rio de Janeiro itself, on the shores of Guanabara Bay. Across the bay from Rio de Janeiro is the city of Niterói.

Guanabara Bay is an oceanic bay located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro. On its Western shore lies the city of Rio de Janeiro, and on its Eastern shore the cities of Niterói and São Gonçalo (all of which are visible as grey expanses).

Guanabara Bay is the second largest bay in area in Brazil, at 412 square kilometres (159 sq mi), with a perimeter of 143 kilometres (89 mi). The bayis 31 kilometres (19 mi) long and 28 kilometres (17 mi) wide at its maximum. Its 1.5 kilometre- (0.93 mi-) wide mouth is flanked at the eastern tip by the Pico do Papagaio (Parrot’s Peak) and the western tip by Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf).

Greenish sediments line the southeastern coastline of Brazil. The city of Rio de Janeiro sits along the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Guanabara in the lower half of the image. While Rio de Janeiro is situated on the western side of the bay, the city of Niteroi is located on the shores of the eastern side.

Moving further inland, a third city can be seen in the upper left corner: Belo Horizonte. The city is located in the São Francisco Basin, is built on several hills, and is completely surrounded by mountains.
