Fires in Mountains North of Great Salt Lake, Western USA

USA – September 5th, 2012

Fires blazing near the Idaho-Montana border release plumes of smoke that blow due eastward (click here for previous images). While the fires appear to be located in mountainous, forested terrain, land of a more arid nature can be observed to the south, near the Great Salt Lake and Great Salt Lake Desert, in Utah, and in Nevada.

Smoke From Western USA Fires Fills Valleys

Smoke from fires in western USA enters the crevices of valleys and rivers between mountain ridges. The western fire season continues, with over 7 million acres by the end of August. While the number of fires is down from the 10-year average of 54,209, the acreage affected is well above the average of 5.4 million acres. The fires have been quite large, particularly in Idaho and Montana, and the cost to fight them continues to rise (click here for previous images).

Smoke from fires by the Idaho-Montana border blows east-northeastward (click here for previous images of fires in western USA). Other nearby geographical features of note include the dark brown lava fields of the Craters of the Moon National Monument, at the center of the bottom edge, and the Great Salt Lake, divided into two distinctly colored halves by a concrete causeway, south of the former in the full image.

Wildfires continue to burn in western USA, remaining most active in Idaho, Montana and California. Two new large fires were reported at the end of August: one each in Idaho and Montana. Here, smoke can be seen filling the valleys between mountain ridges by the Idaho-Montana border.

Smoke From Fires in Western USA Blows Southward Across Utah

As wildfires continue to burn in western USA, smoke blows southward towards Utah and the Great Salt Lake and the Great Salt Lake Desert (west of the lake). The fires from which the smoke originates are clustered in the mountains of Idaho, between the Oregon/Washington and Montana borders.
