Contrails Over Northeastern USA

Some clouds, criss-crossed by airplane contrails, hang over Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and parts of Pennsylvania, in eastern USA. Although New York City is partially obscured by clouds, most of the rest of Long Island is visible, and sediments can be seen between the island and mainland New York. Sediments are also present further northeast, between mainland Massachusetts and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

The cities of Boston (northwest of the Cape Cod Peninsula at the right), Providence (west of the peninsula), and New York (on Long Island, in the bottom left corner) can all be viewed in this image of northeastern USA.

Long Island is both the longest and the largest island in the contiguous United States, extending extends 118 miles (190 km) eastward from New York Harbor to Montauk Point. It has a maximum north-to-south expanse of 23 miles (37 km) between the northern Long Island Sound coast and the southern Atlantic coast.

Greenish sediments tinge the waters south of Massachusetts, USA’s Cape Cod Peninsula, and pass between the islands of Martha‚Äôs Vineyard (left) and Nantucket (right).

The large island visible at the lower left corner is the eastern part of Long Island, part of New York State reaching eastward from Manhattan and containing two of the boroughs of New York City.

While most of the eastern United States of America appears green in this summer image, several cities stand out as greyish or light tan patches. One of the most prominent of these is New York City, located at the western end of Long Island, both the longest and the largest island in the contiguous United States.

Also visible northeast of New York City are Providence, in the state of Rhode Island, and Boston, in Massachusetts. Both are situated along the coastline. Southwest of New York City are Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania, Baltimore, in Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

Other important features of the image include Lake Ontario (upper left quadrant), on the border of the USA and Canada, and the Appalachian Mountains, running up the left side.

Northeastern USA and Southeastern Canada - April 13th, 2009

Southeastern Canada remains dusted with snow while the northeastern United States are snow free in this spring image.

Lake Ontario and its nearby Finger Lakes are visible left of the center, while the eastern tip of Lake Huron is visible on the edge of the image.

Moving over to the coast, the hook-shaped Cape Cod area in Massachusetts, USA is visible at the far right. To the south, Long Island is situated just off the coast, with New York City at its western tip.

Between Lake Ontario and Cape Cod, to the North, is Lake Champlain, a natural, freshwater lake located mainly within the states of Vermont and New York, USA, but partially situated across the US-Canada border in the Canadian province of Quebec.

East of Lake Champlain, a white trail runs North to South. This is the snow-capped peaks of the Green Mountains, in Vermont. The range, which is part of the Appalachian Mountains, extends approximately 400 km (250 mi) and has five peaks over 4,000 feet.
