Eastern Mediterranean – April 1st, 2013

While the end of March saw a large dust storm blowing off the coast of Libya and over the Mediterranean (click here for previous image), the beginning of April saw a different thick dust plume covering the Mediterranean, this type from Egypt. Here, the dust can be seen blowing over the eastern part of the Nile Delta and the Sinai Peninsula before following the curve of the eastern shore of the Mediterranean, by countries such as Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey, before being pushed back towards Egypt once again.

Persian Gulf - May 11th, 2012

Dust spreads over Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Jordan (clockwise from upper left). A thin veil of dust can be observed over the Persian Gulf, through which sediments from the Shatt al-Arab are partially visible. However, the dust is densest to the west, as it spreads over Syria and Jordan and towards Israel/Palestine and Lebanon. Some dust can even be spreading over the Mediterranean Sea (upper left quadrant), by the border with Turkey, and northwards over the Caspian Sea (upper right quadrant).

Cyprus - February 4th, 2012

This orthorectified wide-swath ASAR image shows the island nation of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Turkey and west of Syria and Lebanon. The lighter streaks in the sea off the coast of Syria show the movement of water, flowing westward off the Syrian coast.

Several cities appear as white areas in the image. Of note are Damascus, the capital of Syria, visible towards the bottom right corner, Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, visible along the coast to the northwest of Damascus, and Limassol, the second largest city in Cyprus, visible along the southern coast of the country.

This image of the eastern Mediterranean Sea includes the island-nation of Cyprus (center left), Turkey (above) and Syria (center and lower right), with Lebanon and parts of Israel/Palestine visible along the coast towards the bottom.

Also of interest are several lakes, lined up from top to bottom along the right edge: the reservoir of the Karakaya Dam and Lake Atatürk Dam, both in Turkey, and Lake Assad, in Syria. All are located along the Euphrates River.

Middle East - March 30th, 2011

Much of the eastern and southern parts of this image, stretching across Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, Israel/Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria (counterclockwise from bottom left), appears quite arid.

However, the coastal areas of Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey (south to north) show greener, more vegetated land. The valley along the Euphrates River is also vegetated. Other notable features include Lake Assad (above) and the Dead Sea (below).
