Italy - September 21st, 2011

This image focuses on Italy, with neighbors France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia also partially visible (clockwise from left). The islands of Corsica (France, above) and Sardinia (Italy, below) can also be observed in the Mediterranean Sea.

One of the most striking features of this image are the snow-capped Alps, with lakes such as Lake Garda (center) and Lake Geneva (left) at their feet. The Adriatic Coast of Italy is lined with green sediments. Also of note are the series of condensation trails (contrails) from passing airplanes that have left a criss-crossed set of lines in the air over the sea.

Some snow is still visible atop the Alps in this image of Europe, taken on the first day of the northern hemisphere summer. The Apennines, running down the center of the Italian Peninsula, however, appear snow-free.

To the east of the peninsula is the Adriatic Sea, with numerous Croatian islands lining its eastern shores. Some sediments can be seen entering its northern part, by the delta of the River Po. Northwest of the delta, is Lake Garda, at the foot of the Alps.

Italy, Croatia, Hungary - March 30th, 2011

Snow caps the tops of mountains in Italy (left) and Croatia (center right), making the ranges’ peaks stand out against the surrounding landscape. Particularly notable are the Alps (upper left) and the Apennines (lower left).

Several bodies of water can also be noted: Lake Garda, at the foot of the Alps in Italy, and Lake Balaton, near the upper right edge, in Hungary. Sediments from the River Po can also be seen entering the northern part of the Adriatic Sea.
