Brazil - December 29th, 2011

Several bodies of water can be observed in this image of southern Brazil and Uruguay. Near the top edge, partially covered by clouds, is Lagoa dos Patos (Lagoon of the Ducks), in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It appears tan from sediments. Further south is Lagoa Mirim (Laguna Merín), straddling the border of Brazil and Uruguay. The sediments coloring its waters are darker brown.

Moving westward, to near the left edge of the image, is the Lago Rincón del Bonete. It is the largest body of water in Uruguay. It is located in the middle of the country in the south part of Tacuarembó Department with a small part of it reaching into the north part of Durazno Department. It is an artificial lake formed by a dam on the course of Río Negro. It was constructed in 1945 and has a surface of about 1240 sqkm.
