Falkland Islands - December 27th, 2011

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of East Falkland (known in Spanish as Isla Soledad), the largest of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), located about 250 nautical miles (290 mi; 460 km) from the coast of mainland Argentina.

The index is almost uniformly good (green), with some areas of low activity (yellow) near the center of the northern part of the island. The northern part of the island is hilly, and is crossed by a rugged range, the Wickham Heights, running east and west, and rising in some places to a height of just over 600 m (2,000 feet). The remainder of the island consists chiefly of low undulating ground, a mixture of pasture and morass, with many shallow freshwater tarns, and small streams running in the valleys.

falkland Islands - December 27th, 2011

The Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, located about 250 nautical miles (290 mi; 460 km) from the coast of mainland Argentina. This image focuses on East Falkland (Spanish: Isla Soledad). Visible in the Atlantic to the south is a blue phytoplankton bloom.

East Falkland is the largest of the Falkland Islands, with an area of 6,605 km2 (2,550 square miles) and a coastline 1,036.9 mi (1,668.7 kilometres) long. The island is almost bisected by two deep fjords, Choiseul Sound and Brenton Loch-Grantham Sound which leaves the northern portion and Lafonia in the south, connected only by an isthmus just under 1.5 miles (2.4 km) wide. The island contains many smaller bays, inlets and headland.

Islas Malvinas / Falkland Islands - April 7th, 2010

The Falkland Islands, or Islas Malvinas in Spanish, are located 287 miles (462 km) east of the coast of mainland Argentina, in the South Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago is composed of two main islands, East Falkland (in Spanish: Isla Gran Malvina, due to its larger size) and West Falkland (Isla Soledad) as well as around 776 smaller islands. The two islands are divided by Falkland Sound.

The archipelago has a total land area of 4,700 square miles (12,173 km2), and around 800 miles (1288 km) of coastline. The two main islands, however, make up most of that total area. The islands are a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, although Argentina disputes this claim.

The Falkland Islands, or Islas Malvinas in Spanish, are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, located 287 miles (462 km) from the coast of mainland Argentina (visible on the left side of the full image). The islands are a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, the capital of which is Stanley, although this claim is disputed by Argentina.

The Falkland Islands comprise two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland (in Spanish Isla Gran Malvina and Isla Soledad respectively), and about 776 small islands. The total land area is 4,700 square miles (12,173 km2), with a coastline estimated at 800 miles (1288 km).

The two main islands on either side of Falkland Sound make up most of the land. Both islands have mountain ranges, the highest point being Mount Usborne, 2312 feet (705 m) on East Falkland. There are also some boggy plains, most notably in Lafonia, on the southern half of East Falkland.
