A large iceberg breaks off the shores of the Antarctic Ice Sheet in Queen Maud Land, or Dronning Maud Land, and floats away in the Southern Ocean. Other smaller icebergs can also be seen floating between the main one and the edge of the ice sheet. Many cracks and rifts are visible in the ice sheet itself.

When a mass of ice suddenly splits off and moves away from its parent glacier, iceberg, or ice shelf in such a way, the event is called calving. Calving of ice shelves is usually preceded by a rift. This ice calving or iceberg calving is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption.

An arm of ice stretches between Alexander Island (bottom), the largest island in Antarctica,  and Charcot Island (top), a nunatak. The latter is completely visible in the full image.

Towards the bottom, many icebergs can be seen breaking off the sides of Alexander Island, in a brick-like pattern.

These islands and icebergs are connected by the Wilkins Ice Shelf, in Antarctica’s Wilkins Sound.

The Lambert Glacier (lower left quadrant), visible in this uncommon, virtually cloud-free image, is a major glacier in Antarctica.

At about 60 miles (100 km) wide, over 250 miles (400 km) long, and about 2,500 meters deep, it is the world’s biggest glacier.

It drains a large area to the east and south of the Prince Charles Mountains and flows northward to the Amery Ice Shelf.

An iceberg, which probably broke off of the glacier, can be seen floating to its north.

The enhanced image makes it easier to observe the glacier and the ice flow throughout the area by creating a greater contrast among the shades of white.

This radar (ASAR) images shows several different features of the ice in Antarctica.

The ice in the lower part of the image has many deep grooves.

An ice stream can be seen moving northward into the freezing waters off the coast, where many icebergs are floating.

Further north, particularly in the full image, many ripples are visible in the ice. These may actually be “megadunes” of ice.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf connects several islands in Wilkins Sound, Antartica, including Alexander Island (right), Latady Island (bottom) and Charcot Island (left).

Latady Island is a low ice-covered island, 35 miles long and more than 10 miles wide, with an area of 3,300 km². It lies 45 miles south of Charcot Island and west of Alexander Island.

Alexander Island, Antartica’s largest, is connected to Charcot Island, a nunatak, by an arm of ice. Many icebergs can be seen breaking off the sides of the island, particularly above the arm.

Finally, a small island is visible to the North, just below the Sofia University Mountains, a cluster of four small mountains in north-western Alexander Island, 21 km long in the northeast-southwest direction and 13 km wide.
