Dust Over Gulf of Sidra and Mediterranean Sea, Libya

32.1N 20.0E

March 13th, 2013 Category: Dust Storms

Libya – March 7th, 2013

Dust blows off the coast of Libya and over the Mediterranean Sea. The cloud is thinner over the Gulf of Sidra (left edge to center) and thicker northwest of Benghazi, the second largest city in the country. The airborne particles obscure Libya’s vegetated northern coastal region. Visible by the bottom edge, in the lower left quadrant, as a brown area amidst the sands of the Libyan Desert, is the Haruj Volcanic Field.

Libya – March 7th, 2013

A large cloud of dust blows off the coast of Libya and over the Mediterranean Sea. Northwest of Benghazi, the second largest city in Libya, the dust was thick enough to completely hide the ocean surface below. To the west, over the Gulf of Sidra, the dust is less thick. The dust likely originates from the vast sand seas that cover much of Libya’s interior.

Libya – February 3rd, 2013

Dust blows northeastward off the coast of Libya, from the western limit of the Gulf of Sidra (left), far over the Mediterranean to Greece (upper right). Thicker dust can also be seen by the eastern end of the Jebel Akhdar, a heavily forested, fertile upland area in northeastern Libya (right edge).

Libya – January 25th, 2013

While just one day before this image was captured, the entire Gulf of Sidra was completely covered by airborne dust (click here for previous image), here, strong winds have already cleared much of the area. Dust is now blowing north-northeastward off the coast of Libya from the western part of the gulf only, barely affecting it the eastern half of it.
