Dust can be seen reaching from the coast of Saudi Arabia across the Red Sea to the Farasan Islands, a large coral island group belonging to Saudi Arabia. It is located some 40 km offshore from Jizan, in the far southwestern part of the country. It is a protected area and was home to the extinct Arabian gazelle and, in winter, migratory birds from Europe.

Sand from Saudi Arabia’s Rub al Khali Desert blows over the southern end of the Red Sea, across the Farasan Islands and towards Eritrea (below). The Farasan Islands are a large coral island group belonging to Saudi Arabia. They are located some 40 km offshore from Jizan, in the far southwestern part of the country. They form a protected area that, in winter, is home to migratory birds from Europe.

A plume of dust blows across the Red Sea, between Saudi Arabia (upper right) and Sudan (left) and Eritrea (bottom center, by shoreline). The dust reaches the¬†Dahlak Archipelago (Ge’ez), an island group located in the Red Sea near Massawa, Eritrea. It consists of two large and 124 small islands.

Visible on the opposite side of the side, unaffected by the dust, are the Farasan Islands, a large coral island group in the Red Sea, belonging to Saudi Arabia. It is located some 40 km offshore from Jizan, in the far southwestern part of the country. The largest island of the archipelago is Farasan Island; others include Sajid Island and Zufaf Island.

Dust blows off the coast of the Arabian Peninsula, near the border between Saudi Arabia (above) and Yemen (below), and over the Farasan Islands.

The Farasan Islands are a large coral island group in the Red Sea, belonging to Saudi Arabia. They are located some 40 km offshore from Jizan, in the far southwestern part of the country. The largest island of the archipelago is Farasan Island; others include Sajid Island and Zufaf Island.
