A plume of smoke from a massive forest blaze on New Zealand’s South Island blows over the South Pacific, while a greenish blue phytoplankton bloom flourishes further offshore.

The fire, which started on Tuesday, has been getting larger by the day. It now covers 820 hectares of the Mount Allan area northwest of Dunedin, in the southern part of South Island.

Firefighters have warned that it is likely to be at least several days before the fire is brought under control.  Fire crews have been hindered in their efforts by winds of up to 60 km an hour.
