Black Sea - March 18th, 2012

This image shows the entirety of the Black Sea, located in an elliptical depression which lies between Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. Visible on the western shores of the immense lake is the delta of the Danube River; sediments can be seen flowing from the delta into the sea. To the north, the Sea of Azov, northeast of the Crimean Peninsula and connected to the Black Sea via the Strait of Kerch, is partially covered in ice. The eastern part of the sea, near Georgia, is partially obscured by clouds.

Black Sea - May 18th, 2011

The Black Sea occupies the majority of this image. It has an area of 436,400 km2 (168,500 sq mi), not including the Sea of Azov (the body of water northeast of the Crimean Peninsula that is lined with sediments and connected to the Black Sea by the Strait of Kerch).

The Black Sea forms in an east-west trending elliptical depression which lies between Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. The longest east-west extent is about 1,175 km.

It is constrained by the Pontic Mountains to the south, the Caucasus Mountains (capped with snow by the right edge) to the east and features a wide shelf to the northwest. Visible on the western shores is the delta of the Danube River.

The Danube Delta in Romania and the Dniester Liman in Ukraine

Black Sea - April 28th, 2010

Black Sea - April 28th, 2010

The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe. The majority of the delta lies in Romania (Tulcea county), while its northern part, on the left bank of the Chilia arm, is situated in Ukraine (Odessa Oblast). The approximate surface is 4152 km², of which 3446 km² are in Romania.

Upon opening the full image, several bays are visible near the shoreline in Ukraine, north of the delta. The body of water furthest north is Dniester Liman, a liman formed at the point where the river Dniester flows into the Black Sea. A liman is a name for a lake, bay, or estuary formed at the mouth of a river where flow is blocked by a bar of sediments

The Dniester Liman is located in Ukraine, in Odessa Oblast. The area of the liman varies between 360 and 408 km², it is 42,5 km long and has maximum width of 12 km. The average depth is 1,8 m, the maximum depth 2,7 m.

Rivermouths Along the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea

Black Sea - August 16th, 2009

The Dnieper River flows across Ukraine, first southeast then southwest, into the Black Sea. Further southwest along the shoreline, the mouth and delta of the Danube River can also be seen.

On the right, in Russia, the Don River spills through Taganrog Bay into the  Sea of Azov , which is in turn connected to the Black Sea through the Strait of Kerch.

Lying in the north central part of the Black Sea is the Crimean Peninsula, whose connection to the Ukrainian mainland via the Isthmus of Perekop is punctuated by the salty, marshy inlets of the Sivash Sea.

Both the Danube and the Dnieper can be seen releasing  some sediments into the Black Sea, although the concentration appears to heavier in the Sea of Azov near the mouth of the Don.
