The city of Curitiba appears as a bright white area just left of the center of this orthorectified wide-swath ASAR image. Curitiba is the capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná, and the largest city with the biggest economy of both Paraná and southern Brazil.

The city sits on a plateau at 932 metres (3,058 ft) above sea level. It is located 105 kilometres (65 mi) west of the sea port of Paranaguá. The port can be observed as a small white area on the southern shores of the Bay of Paranaguá.

Another large bay, the Bay of Babitonga, can be observed to the south near the bottom edge. Situated at its entrance is São Francisco do Sul, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. It covers an area of 493 km² (190 miles2).

The State of Paraná, Brazil

Parts of the Brazilian states of Paraná and São Paulo are visible here. Their capital cities, Curitiba and São Paulo, respectively, are located near the coast. Both appear as tan areas amidst the dark green, a bit inland; Curitiba at the center right and São Paulo to the North at the far right.

The state of Paraná includes two geographic regions: a narrow coastal zone that that is home to the Serra do Mar coastal forests, and a high plateau (2500 to 3000 feet) whose precipitous, deeply eroded eastern escarpments are known as the Serra do Mar or Serra do Cubatão.

The southern and central portions of the state are covered by the Araucaria moist forests, one of the most important subtropical forests of the world, and have large tracts of yerba mate, a plant used to make tea.

The plateau slopes westward to the Paraná River, upper left quadrant, which marks the state’s western boundary. Here, the plateau is well watered and moderately fertile, and has a remarkably uniform climate of a mild temperate character.

Finally, the lower western and northern portions of the state are covered by the Paraná-Paraíba interior forests ecoregion.
