Croatia – August 31st, 2012

In the summer of 2012, hundreds of fires have been registered in Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey and Croatia (click here for previous images). In Croatia, where fires have been burning in Istria, on Rab and Mljet islands, near Pula in the northern Adriatic and Sibenik in Dalmatia.

The fires may have been caused by human carelessness, the custom of burning trash, and farmers burning fields for crops. In the latter two cases, fires quickly may burn out of control if winds change and the fire spreads. Macedonian authorities have also accused people wishing to cover up illegal logging sites by burning land.

Croatia, Greece and Romania – August 31st, 2012

Smoke from fires in Croatia spreads northward and eastward over neighboring countries, reaching the curved ridge of the Carpathian Mountains (upper right quadrant). A plume of smoke also stretches over the Adriatic, blowing between the Albanian coast and the southern tip of Apulia, Italy.

Croatia and Romania – August 30th, 2012

As Croatia experiences one its hottest summers in history fires have been spreading along the popular southern coast, affecting local tourism. Here, a thick cloud of smoke billows from the fires, reaching as far as Greece and across the Adriatic to southern Italy. Visible in the upper part of the image is the inverse S-shaped curve of the Carpathian Mountains, in Romania and other Central-Eastern European Nations.

Croatia – August 29th, 2012

Plumes of smoke from fires in Croatia coalesce into a hazy veil over the Dalmation Coast and the Adriatic Sea. The fires have burnt a large area of forest and scrubland along the shoreline; Croatian firefighters are still working to get the blazes under control.
