Dust from the Sahara Desert blows westward off the coast of West Africa. The dust is thickest around the border between Mauritania (above) and Senegal (below), with plumes visible just north of the Senegal River (center) and the Cap-Vert peninsula, a rocky promontory extending west from the main sandy areas of Senegal on which the capital city of Dakar is located.

West Africa – January 7th, 2013

Dust from the Sahara Desert blows off the coast of West Africa. Here, the dust is thickest off the coast of Senegal, north of the Cap Vert Peninsula, and spreads westward over the Cape Verde Islands (upper left edge). Visible south of the peninsula are sediments from rivers in Senegal and the Gambia including the Saloum, Gambia and Casamance (north to south) Rivers.

West Africa - April 28th, 2012

A thick cloud of dust can be seen blowing off the coast of West Africa, by the Mauritania-Senegal border. The dust is situated just north of the Cap Vert Peninsula, on which the Senegalese capital of Dakar is located. To the south, sediments from the Geba River, in Guinea Bissau, can be seen entering the Atlantic Ocean.
