Canary Islands – December 28th, 2012

Dust blows off the coast of Western Sahara and to the northwest, towards the Canary Islands. Although thick plumes have not reached the islands, one can be seen just south of Fuerteventura (right edge). The archipelago is usually affected by large dust storms several times per yer that may last up to a week.

Canary Islands – December 28th, 2012

Dust blows off the coast of Western Sahara and towards the northwest, over the Atlantic Ocean. Visible through the dust is the Wad Ad-Dahabnota Peninsula, also known as the Villa Cisneros Peninsula while the region was under Spanish colonial rule. The Canary Islands can be seen near the top edge of the image, although the dust does not reach them.

West Africa – December 16th, 2012

Dust blows off the coast of Western Sahara (above) and Mauritania (below), north and south of the green-watered Bay of Arguin. The plume north of the bay blows to the east-northeast, while the one to the south blows east-southeast. Visible in the upper right corner are the Canary Islands, while the Cape Verde Islands can be seen at the lower left. Both archipelagos are fully visible in the full image.

Dust from the Sahara Desert continues to blow off the coast of West Africa, off of Senegal (above) and Mauritania (below). Here, the dust blows over the Bay of Arguin, covering the usual green color of its waters, and over the Atlantic Ocean, between the Canary Islands (above) and the Cape Verde Islands (below).

Mauritania – August 26th, 2012

Dust from the Sahara Desert sweeps off the western coast of Africa, mainly along the shoreline of Western Sahara. The dust blows mostly over the Atlantic Ocean towards the southwest, although some reaches near the Canary Islands (above) and the Bay of Arguin (below).
