Fires northwest of the mouth of the Nelson River, in Manitoba, Canada, near the shores of the Hudson Bay, continue to release thick plumes of smoke. Here, winds are carrying the smoke principally in a southwesterly direction.

Fires can be seen in several locations near the Hudson Bay, Canada, in this image. Several plumes are visible in Quebec, east of James Bay, the southern extension of the Hudson Bay (lower right quadrant). The smoke from these fires is blowing towards the west. Another cluster of fires is visible in Manitoba, near the mouth of the Nelson River where it spills into Hudson Bay (center left). The plumes of smoke from those fires blows towards the southwest.

Several large fires burning in the Canadian province of Quebec, east of James Bay, the southernmost reaches of the Hudson Bay, release thick white smoke. The plumes of smoke from the fires nearest the bay blow westward, while those further east blow to the northwest. The smoke from those clustered near the shores of the bay release thick smoke that fans out as it cross the shoreline, obscuring the rich brown sediments coloring the waters below.

Plumes of smoke from several fires near the Hudson Bay, in the province of Manitoba, Canada, waft towards the southwest, away from the bay. In the bay itself, ice can be seen melting as summer begins, while sediments from the Nelson River enter in the lower right quadrant.

Manitoba Dealing With 27 Active Forest Fires, Canada

There were 27 active forest fires burning in Manitoba as of June 25 – all of them in the Northeast Region. There have been 168 forest fires to date this year as of June 25, consuming 127,239 hectares. Eleven helicopters, six Bombardier CL-415 and CL-215 Manitoba water bombers and 202 extra firefighters were involved in fire suppression activities Tuesday.

Ilford-War Lake NE Fire 065 and Keeyask NE Fire 063, both started by lighting almost two weeks ago on June 6, continue to burn out of control, and have necessitated the evacuation of about 500 people from York Landing, south of Split Lake, and home of the York Factory First Nation, War Lake First Nation Band and Ilford, and Manitoba Hydro’s Keeyask infrastructure camp. NE Fire 065 was 50,500 hectares in size as of June 25, while NE Fire 063 was 18,600 hectares in size.
