On the west coast of the Italian island of Sardinia, sediments turn the Bay of Oristano a greenish color and gradually spread along the length of the shoreline. Upon opening the full image, two large ponds can be seen near the shores of the bay: the Stagno di Cabras (north) and the Stagno di Santa Giusta (east).

Moving southeastward from the Bay of Oristano, another important indentation in the Sardinian coastline can be observed: the Golfo degli Angeli (“Gulf of Angels”), also known as the Gulf of Cagliari, a large bay facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is enclosed between the Capo Carbonara from east and the Isola dei Cavoli and Capo Spartivento from west.

Its coasts are partly sandy and partly rocky, including only a few harbours. In the middle of the gulf is the Sant’Elia promontory, part of the territory of Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital, which also houses the most important port.
