Chad – December 17th, 2012

Dust from the Bodélé Depression (right edge, fully visible in full image), in Chad, blows southwestward, north of Lake Chad, and into the neighboring countries of Niger (above) and Nigeria (below), in the lower left quadrant. North of this cloud of dust are the volcanic Aïr Mountains, in Niger.

Chad – December 13th, 2012

The Bodélé Depression, located at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert in north central Africa, is a place where dust storms occur on average about 100 days per year. Here, some dust can be seen blowing towards the southwest, towards Lake Chad.

Recent research has indicated that storms move across the Bodélé Depression at about 47 km/h (29 mi/h)—two times faster than previously believed. The research also found that winds have to whip across the region at a minimum of 36 km/h (22 mi/h), to kick up a dust storm. The pattern of air flow is so common that the winds have scoured a straight path in the ground, marking its southwesterly flow, as can be observed here.

Chad and Mali – November 22nd, 2012

The whitish streak in the upper right quadrant is sand from the Bodélé Depression blowing southwestward. The depression is located at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert in north central Africa, and is the lowest point in Chad. Dust storms from the Bodélé Depression occur on average about 100 days per year.

The bright green area visible in the lower left quadrant is Lake Chad, a large, shallow, endorheic lake surrounded by Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria, on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Due to its shallowness, the size of the lake fluctuates frequently.

Chad – October 21st, 2012

Light, almost white dust can be seen blowing about the Bodélé Depression, located at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, in Chad, in north central Africa. It is the lowest point in the country. Dust storms from the Bodélé Depression occur on average about 100 days per year. As the wind sweeps between the Tibesti and the Ennedi Mountains in Northern Chad, it is channeled across the depression. Here, the dust can be seen spreading past Lake Chad (green, bottom center).

Dust Near Lake Chad, Over Nigeria and Chad

Chad - January 4th, 2012

Dust can be observed in the air over Nigeria, southwest of Lake Chad (center). The white smudge to the northeast, in Chad, is a dust storm in the Bodélé Depression, located at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert in north central Africa. The lowest point in Chad, dust storms from the Bodélé Depression are very common, occurring on average about 100 days per year.

Desertification in the region has been increasing, and Lake Chad, once one of the world’s largest water bodies, could disappear in 20 years due to climate change and population pressures, resulting in a humanitarian disaster in central Africa. The lake – surrounded by Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria – has shrunk by 90 per cent, going from 25,000 square kilometers in 1963 to less than 1,500 square kilometers in 2001.

The 30 million people living in the Lake Chad region are being forced into competing over water, and the drying up of the lake could lead to migration and conflicts. Fish production has recorded a 60 per cent decline, while pasturelands have been degraded, resulting in a shortage of animal feed, livestock and biodiversity. A radical change in water management techniques is needed to stem the diminishing flow of water into Lake Chad.
