Strait of Hormuz - November 19th, 2008

The main body of water visible in this image is the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf (west) to the Gulf of Oman (east).

The landmass on the lower right is the Musandam Peninsula in Oman, just north of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

In contrast with the extremely ridged terrain of the peninsula is the province of Hormozgan, Iran, above.

The island in the center, Qeshm Island, a free trade zone, is separated from the mainland by Clarence Strait and is located opposite the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Bandar Khamir.

We can see a strong green algal bloom off the southern end of the island.
