Haze Over Bangladesh; Clear Skies Over Myanmar

Bangladesh and Myanmar – January 27th, 2013

Haze hangs over southern Bangladesh and the mouths of the Ganges Rivers, along the Bay of Bengal. Mountains prevent the haze, which was likely caused by a mixture of smoke from agricultural fires and pollutants in India and Bangladesh, from spreading further eastward into Myanmar. The skies over the mountainous Chin state, near the border, are completely clear. Also, in contrast to the veiled view of the mouths of the Ganges, the Gulf of Martaban and mouths of the Ayeyarwaddy River, in Myanmar, can be seen with great clarity.

Rivermouths and Sediments from Bangladesh to Myanmar

Although this image is centered on Myanmar (Burma), it is particularly interesting to observe the mouths of the Ganges River (top left), in Bangladesh, and those of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwaddy) River (bottom center-right), in Myanmar.

Many sediments are spilling forth from the mouths of the Ganges. Near the mouths of the Irrawaddy, on the other hand, few sediments are seen.

However, the bay to the East is full of sediments and an algal bloom. The majority of these sediments are coming from the Yangon River.
