Lake Managua (also known as Lake Xolotlán), a lake in Nicaragua, takes on various hues of grey, brown and green from sediments and algae. The city of Managua, the country’s capital, lies on its southeastern shore, visible in the full image as a tan area between the lake and the surrounding bright green vegetation.

At 1,042 km², it is approximately 65 kilometres (40 miles) long and 25 kilometres (15 miles) wide. A peninsula can be seen jutting into the lake from its southern side – this is Apoyeque, a pyroclastic shield volcano with a 2.8-km wide, 400-m-deep, lake-filled caldera.
