Haze from Po Valley to Apulia Coast, Italy

45.4N 9.1E

March 5th, 2013 Category: Climate Change, Clouds

Italy – March 4th, 2013

Haze hangs over the Po Valley of northern Italy, hemmed in between the Alps to the north and the Apennines to the southeast. It also spreads southeastward past the Po Delta, and then frames Italy’s Adriatic Coast, reaching southward to the shoreline of the Apulia Region.

The source of the haze could be fires, fog, or smog and air pollution. Air pollution is one important factor in climate change in Italy. Air pollutants arise from biomass burning, urban-industrial and natural sources. Under certain atmospheric circulation configurations, long-range or trans-boundary transport of pollutants, including aerosols, carbon monoxide, ozone, desert dust, mould spores and pesticide may occur over large distances and over time scales of typically four to six days (click here for more information).

Italy – January 26th, 2013

The Alps, one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, are covered in snow in this winter image. The mountains stretch approximately 1,200 kilometres (750 mi) across eight countries from Austria and Slovenia in the east, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, France to the west and Italy and Monaco to the south. Here, a fog can be seen extending over northern Italy, from the Alps, across the valley of the River Po, to the northern slopes of the Apennines.

Italy – December 28th, 2012

Snow rests on the crests of the Alps, in northern Italy, while the peaks of the Apennines, running down the center of the country, are mostly snow-free. Lake Garda can be seen at the foot of the Alps, the southern part of its basin reaching towards the Po Valley, which flanks the River Po and is nestled between the Alps and the northern segment of the Apennines.

Italy, Switzerland, France - May 11th, 2012

The Alps, covered in snow, arch across the upper part of this image, marking the border between Italy (right) and Switzerland (above, left) and France (below, left). A plume of smoke from a fire near Lake Geneva blows southward and then curves to the west, trailing out over the Mediterranean Sea.
