The bright green waters of a lake along the path of the Nile River create a surprising contrast with the dry tones of the Bayuda Desert (below the river) and the Nubian Desert (above the river).

The lake was created by the construction of the Merowe Dam, also known as the Hamdab Dam in northern Sudan, about 350 km (220 mi) north of the capital Khartoum. It is situated on the river Nile, close to the 4th Cataract where the river divides into multiple smaller branches with large islands in between.

The main purpose of the dam will be the generation of electricity. Its dimensions make it the largest contemporary hydropower project in Africa.
