The city of Lisbon appears as a bright white are along the banks of the Tagus River Estuary. The white color spreading further inland, away from the river, is part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and Region.

Lisbon, the capital and largest city of Portugal, with a municipal population of 564,477 in 84.8 km2 (33 sq mi).

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area, on the other hand, has a total of around 2.8 million inhabitants, and 3.34 million people live in the broader agglomeration of Lisbon Metropolitan Region (which includes cities ranging from Leiria to Setúbal, visible south of the Tagus Estuary).

Towards the rivermouth, a bright white line crosses the Tagus; this is the 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril), a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left bank of the Tagus river.
